ABOUT OUR OHANA

Come experience the unifying methodology of Universal Blend!

Founded by Grandmaster Darrell Sarjeant,  this expression of martial sciences brings together his over 40 years experience and knowledge under leading pioneers of the martial sciences in America! Universal Blend emphasizes exploration of the core movements, principles, and concepts of the martial arts in a comprehensive yet simplistic perspective.

All Martial Sciences share common core movements. Universal Blend delves deep into this and unifies them in a manner that allows the student or master to further evolve in their art.

Opportunities for seminars with Grandmaster Sarjeant are available anywhere in the world! We welcome anyone who desires to continue their expansion of knowledge and a deeper study in the martial sciences.

Grandmaster Darrell Sarjeant began his training in 1973 being taught informally by his older brother. After a dojo opened close to  his house he began studying the arts of Shotokan Karate Do and Kar Do Jitsu Ryu under Sensei Nick Bruno. Upon Sensei Bruno moving, the dojo became students of Goshin Do Kempo and Samurai Ryu Jiu Jitsu where some of Sarjeant’s most extensive training began under the guidance of Kancho Ralph Gastiaburo, Founder of Goshin Jutsu Karate Do, where he trained diligently over five years.

The next chapter for Sarjeant began with his training in Goju Ryu Karate Do under several of the leading Grandmasters and Elders. In Goju Ryu GM began his study of Goju Ryu with the late Shihan Glenn Nieves of Staten Island Goju. Sarjeant received his first black belt under Shihan Nieves. Sarjeant than met and became a prime student under Seiko Hanshi Rick Diaz, the last person to receive 10th Degree under Maestro Peter Urban. Under this direct lineage Sarjeant received through 8th Degree Black Belt, Kyoshi (Professor). GM also trained extensively with Hanshi Rico Guy, Founder of the US Budokaikan. Sarjeant trained in Goju Ryu and Go Kempo Jitsu receiving black belts in both. GM also received training in Chinese Goju and Black Dragon Aikijutsu from both Hanshi Diaz and the Founder of Chinese Goju, Shidoshi Ron Van Clief.

Turning the page, Sarjeant began his deep study of Jujutsu and Aikijujutsu. Sarjeant began his study of Kempo Jujutsu under Kancho Ralph Gastiaburo. His training in Jujutsu continued under several leading pioneers of Jujutsu in America. Sarjeant studied Kumite Ryu Jujutsu under its Founder Soke Lil’ John Davis. Upon the return of the late Dr. Moses Powell, GM studied under his leadership in Sanuces Ryu Jujutsu. GM continues his training in Sanuces under GM Haisan Kaleak, Founder of Sanuces Ryu Eye to Eye Jiu Jitsu International and President of the Family of Sanuces Organization. Sarjeant was elected as the Vice President of the Family of Sanuces Organization, and currently holds that position. Sarjeant would often train in the morning classes of Professor Florendo Visitacion and Professor David James the Inheritor of Vee Arnis Jitsu. GM was able to continue learning aspects of Veejitsu and Vee Arnis Jitsu from Hanshi James Roma of Akron Vee Jitsu and awarded documentation allowing him to teach any and all aspects of Veejitsu. Sarjeant became a prime student of the late Soke Billy Davis, ultimately becoming the Soke/Inheritor of the Davis Jujutsu Self Defense System. Sarjeant remained a student of Shidoshi Ron Van Clief and Shidoshi Glenn Perry in Black Dragon Aikijutsu and received the rank of 8th Degree Black Belt, Hanshi. Returning to his original roots through GM John Bain and the International Martial Arts Society, GM was recognized as 10th Degree in Kenpo Jujutsu and through The Tracy Kenpo Worldwide Organization under GM Mark Tracy, GM was recognized as 9th Degree Black Belt. Another very important system of Kempo Jitsu that GM trained was Go Kempo Jitsu, founded by Hanshi Rico Guy. Hanshi Guy was the first student of Soke Billy Davis and was also among the early practitioners of Shorinji Kempo in America. GM received black belt in the system. Today GM is also recognized within the Kajukembo Self-Defense Systems International as a Grandmaster within their organization KSDSI.

Sarjeant continued to seek deeper knowledge of the martial sciences and began his study of Filipino, Indonesian, and African martial sciences. Training under many leading instructors of Arnis, Kali, Kuntao, Silat, and Saki. Sarjeant began his training in Arnis under Soke Lil’ John Davis and Professor Florendo Visitacion within their Kumite Ryu and Vee Arnis Jitsu systems. Sarjeant further continued his study in Aneh Palu Kali Silat and Sadiq Kuntao Silat under Punong Maestro Brandt Smith (Hassan Ali) ultimately becoming the Chief Instructor of the Sadiq Kuntao Silat System. Sarjeant attended a seminar under a very small family system at the time and the head of its system Ama Guro Raffy Pambuan. This attendance opened the door to being accepted as a student under the first Guro of Pambuan Arnis, Kuya-Guro John Bain. Kuya developed the syllabus of Espiritu Mandirigma Arnis, the original syllabus of the Pambuan Family. Sarjeant is today the only Guro promoted by Kuya-Guro Bain, thus being the Senior Guro.

Sarjeant was initially introduced to Pencak Silat through Punong Maestro Smith through Raja Monyet and Sadiq Kuntao Silat. Upon becoming chief instructor of Sadiq Kuntao Silat Sarjeant began to expand his knowledge of Pencak Silat through training directly with Maha Guru Cliff Stewart, Founder of Kilat Pukulan Pencak Silat Sera and the Senior Guru of Kilat Pukulan Pencak Silat Guru Thomas Lomax and being named as a Antek as found in Inside Kung Fu Magazine. Through his years in Silat he has had several training experiences with Maha Guru Richard DeBordes of Minangkabau Harimau and Pendekar Steven Benitez of Satria Fighting Arts. This training also enabled Sarjeant to delve into methods of African Fighting sciences as taught by Ahati Kilindi Iyi and Baba Kenny Moody.

GM has been recognized in several martial arts Hall of Fames and has been very successful running YMCA martial arts programs. GM regularly travels teaching seminars throughout the country and through all of this, it has led Grandmaster Sarjeant to bring this knowledge and wisdom into the Universal Blend Institute. He welcomes serious practitioners to the Universal Blend Family.
